VIKASA Capital Supports Mauritian Artist Joshila Dhaby at Miami’s Art Basel Events
VIKASA Capital was thrilled to support Mauritian artist Joshila Dhaby (Jay Dee) in the creation of a live public painting titled “A Better Future” at the Meeting of Styles Street Art Event during Art Basel in Miami December 6 – 9, 2018. As a prolific painter and muralist, Joshila’s work offers a glimpse into life in the Republic of Mauritius, incorporating themes of sustainable development, social responsibility, and appreciation for the natural world. As the global financial industry increases its attention on Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG) practices, VIKASA seeks to affirm our commitment to remain an industry leader. With VIKASA’s first Mauritius office having been located in Calebasses, directly adjacent to Joshila’s hometown, we are delighted to see our partnership come full circle. Our support of her work at the well-attended Miami event also allows us to promote our company and our ESG efforts while raising awareness about her artistry, Mauritian heritage and sustainability themes in the United States and abroad.
Born in the small village of Arsenal, located in the North-Western part of Mauritius, Joshila grew up absorbing and appreciating the tropical landscape around her. Since deciding to fully pursue her artistic visions, she has experienced great success participating in international exhibitions and helping to build the street-art community in Mauritius. Initially working with watercolor, her pieces have evolved to be lively, colorful depictions of humans and animals intertwined with drips and splashes that echo the wild and imperfect nature of life. Her vivid imagery evokes passion for ecology and forces the viewer to call into question the way that humans interact with nature. Her pieces are hopeful, contemplative, and symbolic of the power of the human condition to overcome social and environmental challenges. Above all, her pieces are an insight into her Mauritian heritage and the culture of sustainability which prevails in island environments.
“We chose to support Joshila’s efforts at VIKASA because her work is so in-line with what we are trying to do as a company. We are committed to incorporating ESG principles into every facet of our business so when we found this parallel between the themes in Joshila’s work, we saw an opportunity. We also appreciate the fact that much of her work is public which furthers the reach of her artistic message. As a company with an office in Mauritius, we are proud to support Joshila’s work and hope to spread the word about our commitment to sustainability in our global reach,” speaks VIKASA Capital CEO, Roshan Pujari.
Having exhibited both in Mauritius and internationally, including renowned street-art events in Copenhagen, Denmark and Upfest in Bristol, Miami’s legendary Art Basel seemed a logical place for Joshila’s work to be on display. The fair brings leading galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa to show significant work from the masters of Modern and contemporary art, as well as the new generation of emerging stars. During the fair, local walls will become canvases for the 91+ artists from 23 countries participating in the International Meeting of Styles. As part of this event, Joshila created a live public piece “A Better Future” which carries the meaning that we are accountable and responsible for our actions and relationship with nature. The piece will remain on display for one year. She also participated in a group exhibition at Wyn 317, a contemporary art gallery located in downtown Miami.
As Joshila brings attention to ESG principles through her work, VIKASA seeks to shine a light our efforts to incorporate a culture of sustainability in all we do.
